Whatcha think?

So,  currently, i use one of thee as a set-top computer.

We dont bother with cable tv, and have no complaints – we use it regularly for day-to-day computer shit… sometimes i’ll even work out of the living room instead of the back office on days i’m feeling like laying around in my underwear through the workday.

BUT.  I wanna play some vidya gaems.

So!  the question is:

Think the ps3 would be a sufficient substitute?  Obviously it would be for netflix and hulu, which we use all the time..  but i’ve heard thier web browser sucks ass..

Thoughts SG?

  1. I’m not into strictly gaming gear, but what is TV set highest resolution? And even if you can connect the console to a high resolution screen, doesn’t the console itself have limits?

I’ve never seen better graphics on a console when compared to a graphic card that’s not even high-end, it’s just a good card. Also, those PS3 games I play when I visit my buddy bore me almost instantly. I hate using pads (I’m controlling “Fallout” with keyboard and mouse, have also finished “Assassin’s Creed 2” this way).
Finally, we’ve learned that the console version of  “AC2” is shorter by about 1/4 of the PC version, where there’s another whole part of a city revealed and one more, long chapter of the game to enjoy before the ending part.
    EDIT:
Last but not least, game mods on PC versus game mods on a console.. You don’t even want me to start elaborating on that shit. I still play “Fallout”, and I’m a registered user of Nexus Fallout forums. I can only imagine how much fun Skyrim will be if Bethesda releases the Skyrim designing tool for the PC fanbase.
  2. I’ve got pretty much everything on the market now hooked up to my TV. PC & Mac, PS3, 360, Wii and by far I use the PS3 the most for netflix and Blu-Ray while I play a lot of games on the 360. The main reasoning for that is because the PS3 has an awesome Bluetooth remote so I can just sit back and chill, it just doesn’t have a lot of games that I want to play so you may find that your opinion differs. The web browser is a piece of shit though compared to a Mac Mini.

I have just recently got into PC gaming again however and it’s quickly become one of my favorite ways to play games, it just hasn’t replaced my consoles entirely and I don’t think it ever actually will.

My suggestion is to get a PS3 as it’s probably the most rounded of the options but at the end of the day there’s not going to be one and only one solution for what you’re looking for because each system kinda fills a specific niche. Consoles are meant to play games and just happen to play Netflix and browse the internet in a limited capacity while PCs are awesome for file serving and browsing the internet but are pretty hard to play games on while sitting 6 feet away on a couch.

  3. Have had a PS3 for over a year. Aside from the account hacking bullshit earlier this year, it’s been great. Netflix, USB HD with movies/music, and gorgeous games all in one spot. It was so nice I actually bought a better TV for it.

  4. yeah, the ps3 would probably be your best bet. if only you had a newer modern tv then you would have been able to be switching off periodically with the ps3 for gaming/ movies and your mac mini for web browsing
just find a cheap tv on craigslist or something and im sure you can find something like yours for under $100 and connect that with your mac min for your web browsing haha and their! 1 tv for gaming and the other tv for your porn watching. done
  5. This, with one caveat: get a wireless mouse and keyboard and one of those rolling laptop workstations and soon you’ll have your feet up on an ottoman playing on your big screen wondering why you used to hunch like a eunuch troll in front of your 20 inch monitor. Plus when you have pleasant lady company over you can roll it into the corner so you don’t look like a total neckbeard. My PS3 functions purely as a Blu Ray player and whenever I get around to Netflix. Switch between inputs when you want to use one or the other. The solution is far simpler than you’re making it out to be.

So let’s cut to the chase: yes, I will join your Borderlands clan when it gets put together and yes, all pearlescent drops are mine until further notice
