OC: Scratch built robot model, WIP

Starting off with some sculpey and balsa. The sculpey was dropped pretty early on, as it was so much harder than the balsa that the balsa would pit terribly when sanded.

I ended up here, which I hated so bad that I broke all apart. The forearms, overall balance, foot fins, etc, was shit. The parts that used to be the second part of the leg down from the thigh ended up being the forearms of the new model.

Broken all apart, beginning to implement magnets in the wood. For a while I had new forearms made out of inhalers.

Beginning to built the hands and fingers. Every finger, including the thumb, is attached magnetically.

Anyways, I kept a pretty piss poor log of his build progress, and spent two weeks of carefully filling rough spots and sanding and painting in a never ending, maddening cycle (so maddening that I decided to start dicking with TM while I was waiting for bondo or paint to dry) until I got the surface I wanted. There are still plenty of spots that still need filling and sanding. So, here he is as of tonight, shot in our greenscreen room.

Some comparative scale next to my busted-ass sneak.

Here’s how it all comes apart. Soon, the legs in the background will also be completely modular.

Anyways, that’s it. My next one is gonna be fucking awesome, but probably a huge learning experience as well. Hope ya’ll can dig it.

  1. fucking magnets? how do they work?

this is truly awesome work man. i like the white/red, but white/silver-chrome-gunmetal grey would look good too.

  2. Thanks Ya’ll. Been posted up in my bedroom working on about 5 separate projects like this, nonstop, so it’s reassuring to hear positive feedback.

  3. I’ll give you some elements of this sculpture are derivative, (particularly the nonsensical antenna and panels out the back) but the over all package is original and clever I found the hands particularly interesting. I thought the second pic of it without feet was interesting as a full size robot like that would probably be heavy enough to just stab into the ground with blade like feet, but what you did is probably more practical. How do you find time to do stuff like this?
