It’s spinal surgery time!!

Remember these from last year some time?? (Yeah, these are me…)

Yeah, well, the steroid injections did nothing (of course)… and so now? Tomorrow I head up to the hospital to add myself to the waiting list for surgery. I’m heading in for a C5/6 Anterior Discectomy, with a Disc Replacement using a Spinal Kinetics M6 Device. This should be done in the next 3-6 months, which means my trip to the US will be postponed until further notice. Good thing my passport is good for another 10 years, eh?
How will this affect my roller derby?? Well… I’ll have to take about 3 months off – depending on how I heal up – and then I’ll be back at it, probably better than before… complete with unrestricted movement etc etc bullshit bullshit. WOO HOO!!
Here’s a place to check out some information on what I’m about to have done… but if you don’t feel like checking out the site, at least watch this little movie/video/whatever. It’s pretty awesome.
Thank you and good night.

  1. I hope all goes smoothly, it sucks to hear that you gotta do this, but we are all pulling for you. Get better and get out there. Give Klaus some catnip for us.

  2. good luck, I remember talking to you about this a while back.. I’m sure it’ll be fine and you’ll be back on your feet in no time..  they fused my c5-6, and really it took me about a year to feel fully back to myself, but exercising and stretching definitely help..

those steroid epidurals are bullshit aren’t they? reduced pain for a day or so while the local anesthetic wears off, then no improvement.. biggest mistake of my life was looking over and seeing the needle before the first one i got.. what has been seen, cannot be unseen O_o

  3. I and an L-5 surgery years ago, it was kind of a sudden thing but it turned alright which in retrospect was just some blind, dumb luck on my part:) Take your time,,,,the US isn’t going anywhere!

  4. I think he knows that something’s coming. The adorable little bastard slept on and around my head all night last night. You bet I’m tired today.

  5. Yeah, I saw that needle. It was pretty fucking epic. I also saw the hole that was left in my neck once I took the bandaid off at the end of the day. Fucking enormous. The feeling of all of that shit they were injecting was something I’ll not forget too soon either… and yeah. No improvement.

I’m thinking I’m lucky to avoid fusing altogether… but this is the last step before they’d have to do that… Let’s hope it doesn’t resort to that. (I’m sure it won’t.)
  6. Best wishes!

Um… so you say your doctor is a bit “handsy”? Does that mean he cops a feel after they put you under? Is that a fringe benefit of being a doc in Canadia?
