Two Fruitland Park, Fla. cops have lost their jobs after an FBI source named the two as members of the Ku Klux Klan. According to WFTV, Deputy Police Chief David Borst resigned last Thursday and Cpl. George Hunnewell was fired on Friday. This isn’t the first time a Fruitland Park officer has been accused of belonging to the KKK.

In 2009, Officer James Elkins quit after it was discovered he was a “district Kleagle,” or recruiter, for the National Aryan Knights of the KKK. Photos surfaced of Elkins “dressed in Klan regalia, including one in which his uniform, badge and service revolver were visible beneath his unfastened white robe.”The Southern Poverty Law Center notes that Elkins was using a P.O. box to send and receive KKK literature.

Current Fruitland Park chief Terry Issacstold the Orlando Sentinel that this recent episode has upset the rest of the force. Borst was responsible for training many of the 13 full-time and five part-time cops in the department. “The last thing I was expecting to hear in the year 2014 was for a professional law-enforcement officer to be a member of a subversive organization,” Issacs said. That’s fair — 2009 was a long, long five years ago.
