dear spaceghetto,

So I’m buying a new TV. I have not owned a TV in several years, never mind a fancy pants flat screen. I have no fucking clue what the heck to buy. I figured most of you know what the cool kids are staring at these days. Suggestions?

  1. I have a 42 inch LG I got on discount due to it being a display model (only flaw was a scratch in the stand but I covered that shit up with a taffeta runner like boss fucking hogg)

refresh rate of 120 mhz to me is more important than any other number if you want to use it as a PC monitor (here is where things get sorta tricky)

the hardest part is thinking ahead so your setup isn’t totally gauche, figure out a way to put your tower unit where it can get the proper air circulation it needs but isn’t a glaring trip hazard

then get a wireless keyboard and mouse combo and one of those rolling workstation trays so can game and/or ghetto from the comfort of your couch and then wheel it into a corner tastefully when company comes over so you don’t appear to be a total shut-in

just pick something that fits your budget and the back seat or trunk of your car, don’t be that person that waits until the receipt prints up on the ginormous tv you just bought to say OKAY NOW HOW WILL I FIT THIS IN MY CAR because those of us who own pickup trucks do not appreciate that call right after work just because your eyes got bigger than your back seat at the Mart

  2. If you shop around 42′ flat screens can be had in the 300-400 range and they are absolutely worth it for several reasons 1: They are light! they weigh maybe 30 pounds at most. I have a 32′ CRT TV downstairs and that motherfucker easily weighs 200 pounds plus, when it dies I don’t even know how I’m going to get that bastard back out! 2: All these new flat screens have the HD digital tuner built right in so if you don’t have cable you can just do the rabbit ears thing and your ready to go. When we bought our first one the big debate was between plasma and LCD, we bought plasma and I like it better then the LCD (I think it has a brighter sharper picture Mrs DW says she see’s no real difference) but they do have a very shiny “Glass” surface that throws off alot of glare so you don’t want any light sources pointed right at it. I’ve heard several conflicting things about them at this point. I heard that everyone stopped making plasma TV’s and I heard they we’re back. Also they are now making them network ready with wireless or by ethernet. You’ve picked a good time to shop for TV’s have fun!

  3. Really depends on a number of things. How far are you sitting back from it? Do you need to have a wide viewing angle? 3d or not? Is the room light controlled, or will you be watching in a variety of ambient light? Do you have an independent media hardware input (boxee, appletv, netflix device), or do you need onboard functionality?

Personally, I watch from a ~10′ viewing distance in a room that’s fairly consistently dark. When I did the research a year ago, the sweet spot was a plasma, 52″, for the top tier panasonic viera(sic?). Comparable image quality to a sony, for significantly less. (sub 1k). Has onboard functionality for amazon and netflix, which is convenient if you don’t want to buy another box. 0 complaints.
  4. i use a Sony BRAVIA 40″ EX700, its energy efficient and led edge lit – so it sits flat against the wall on a wall bracket. …and if you like to watch movies/blueray and play games, owning a PS3 works well too as you can use bravia-sync .. that way you control everything with one remote.

The other tip is, if your going to invest into bluray hi definition movies, make sure your TV is more than 40″ in size otherwise your wasting your money on anything less.

I have no problems with the Sony,  although i bought an extended 5 year warranty just to be safe, because you never know with all TVs these days.

One other thing, fuck 3D i massively dislike this marketing ploy. Stick to a regular tv, otherwise if you have to think of the 3D as a bonus.

  5. I have a buddy who got this big ass samsung with 3d and a 240 mhz refresh rate. He acts very proud but you can tell that it really eats at him when, invariably while entertaining guests, someone will mention that everything looks hyper real and kind of like a soap opera.

  6. yeah the downside to HD is that everything looks too crisp, last night I spent the first half hour of Dark City just thinking WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH RUFUS SEWELL’S EYE WERE THESE SCENES FILMED DURING THE ONSET OF HIS STROKE
