Tired of having a different leash for hiking, running, and plain old go-take-a-shit walks – Our Hero decides to make a leash himself that can be securely shortened, lengthened, or clipped to fixed points..
I went with uber-organic-mega-sustainable bullshit just for kicks.
Manila line, Jute cordage for the whipping, and burlap for reinforcement of the attachment points.
Okay, let’s back splice the clips on both ends.. manilla’s fray-ity, so lets do that be fore we start ruining the line.
The hardest part of learning how to splice (for me, at least) was figuring out how to get it started. Once you can sorta ‘read’ the line, this is cake:

wrap the tail of the splice in burlap, and cover it with whipping..
And then whip on your clip points..
I have four of them. two about a foot and a half up from the ends, and two more at even points between those. Clipping one end to the dog, and the other end to the nearest point makes a good hand-sized loop. clipping both to the dog gives you a short lead with the dog at the Heel position. the rest of the clip points of for changing the length to something in between. When I hike, one end is clipped to my pack, instead of making a hand loop.
Oh, and SOUP!
Not really – boiling sets the Jute and pulls all the preservatives out of the manila.
